As Chief Executive Officer of Berkshire Residential Investments, Mr. Leitner is responsible for leading all aspects of the company’s investment activities and operations. He is a member of Berkshire’s Board of Directors and serves on the Berkshire Investment Committee. Additional responsibilities at Berkshire include serving on a range of real estate operating company boards including LCB Senior Living, Clearwater Living, Leggatt McCall Partners, and Lodging Capital Partners. He also served as Chairman and President of the former REIT, Berkshire Income Realty, Inc., prior to its privatization. He has been with Berkshire since 2013.
Mr. Leitner is an experienced executive, with nearly four decades in real estate and alternative investment management. Immediately prior to joining Berkshire, Mr. Leitner served as Chairman and CEO of the ULI Greenprint Center for Building Performance and as a member of the advisory board for SVP Global, a hedge fund manager specializing in distressed debt investments. Earlier, Mr. Leitner spent 24 years at RREEF, a global real estate and alternative investment management business and a division of Deutsche Asset Management, serving in a variety of roles, including Global Head and Chairman. He helped build the firm into one of the leading real estate and alternative asset investment advisors with $80 billion in assets under management. His experience covers the full range of property types and global geographies. Prior to RREEF, Mr. Leitner held positions in real estate investment and finance with GE Capital, and TIAA/CREF. Additionally, he served as a director for Dexus, a listed office and residential property trust in Australia, and DB Real Estate Investment GmbH, a German-based manager of multi-strat global real estate funds. He is a member, trustee, and governor of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) as well as a member and past board director of the Pension Real Estate Association (PREA).
